His Girl Friday
MOVIES!, 11:05pm
Catch a Classic!
One of the fastest, funniest and most quotable films ever, this 1940 Howard Hawks-directed screwball comedy is a quintessential example of that type of film from the genre’s heyday in the 1930s and early ’40s. When adapting Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s hit 1928 play The Front Page into this film, Hawks had the inspired idea of turning its star reporter character Hildy Johnson into a woman. The result is an immortal mix of hard-boiled newsroom setting and remarriage comedy, and Rosalind Russell as Hildy is a standout among cinema’s powerful women. She is matched in force only by her conniving but charismatic editor and ex-husband, Walter Burns (Cary Grant). Burns dangles the chance for Hildy to scoop her fellow reporters with the story of an impending execution in order to keep her from hopping the train that’s supposed to take her to Albany and a new life as a housewife married to bland insurance man Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy).

The Wizard of Oz
TBS, 8pm
Catch a Classic!
It’s hard to pick a favorite from among the many terrific movies released in the magical Hollywood year of 1939 — considered one of Tinseltown’s greatest years ever in terms of popular releases and box office returns — but The Wizard of Oz has to be near the top of the list for most people. One of the best-loved movies of all time, this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s novel stars Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy, a young Kansas farm girl who is whisked away by a twister to the land of Oz. Accompanied by a brainless Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a heartless Tin Man (Jack Haley) and a cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) — and pursued by a wicked witch (Margaret Hamilton) — Dorothy and her little dog, Toto, follow the yellow brick road in search of the titular Wizard (Frank Morgan), so that he may grant her wish to return home. Over 80 years later, The Wizard of Oz is as fun as ever and still looks stunningly beautiful in both its black-and-white and its color world, and its color cinematography received an Oscar nomination. The film netted five other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, and won for its musical score and for Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg’s classic song “Over the Rainbow.”

The British comedy team of Monty Python — Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin — began airing their surreal sketch series Monty Python’s Flying Circus in 1969, with the episodes eventually coming across the pond in the early ’70s for Americans to discover. Fans everywhere continued enjoying Python beyond the series, when they began bringing their absurdist humor to the big screen in both original productions and in filmed productions of their stage shows where they re-created famous sketches. Several of those features are airing for the first time on TCM tonight, beginning with the troupe’s first theatrical film: Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), a hilarious take on Arthurian legends. Next is the concert comedy film Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl (1982), followed by Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979), a dark (and probably still controversial to some) comedy that mercilessly pokes fun at religious tenets and beliefs. Next are two documentaries: Monty Python: The Meaning of Live (2014) and The Meaning of Monty Python (2013). The lineup concludes with Monty Python Live at Aspen (1998), a reunion show with surviving Python members Cleese, Gilliam, Idle, Jones and Palin appearing onstage together for the first time since the early ’80s.
